It’s time to get real excited because this Friday (April 26) at noon in UC room 333 the first ever Letters and Lunch is going down.
This is a great opportunity to meet women from other sororities. It should be a fun time where we discuss current issues over a brown bag lunch. And this months topic is….
Women Portrayed in the Media.
Check out this fact from Miss Representation (a website dedicated to promoting media literacy and teaching critical thinking skills about gender roles in the media)
In one week American teenagers spend 31 hours watching TV, 17 hours listening to music, 3 hours watching movies, 4 hours reading magazines, 10 hours online. That’s 10 hours and 45 minutes of media consumption a day. (source)
That’s a lot of media exposure! Since we live in a media saturated world, it is important to be aware of the messages and influence of the media. Does the media portray women in a way we want to be portrayed? When you see women in the media do you see our common Greek values of intelligence, compassion and leadership represented?
“We can’t be what we can’t see.”
Do you like what you see?
Bring your thoughts on this important issue to the discussion this Friday!
And don’t forget your lunch 🙂
See you Friday!
